Norfolk,VA- Norfolk State University is one of 11 NCAA Division I schools to receive an Accelerating Academic Success Program (AASP) Grant for the 2023-24 academic year. The AASP program, established in 2012, helps schools meet NCAA’s academic standards and supports the academic success of student-athletes. Norfolk State’s Director of Athletics, Melody Webb, expressed gratitude to everyone involved in securing the grant and highlighted the outstanding work of the academic staff in utilizing the funds to develop initiatives and programs that enhance the student-athlete experience. The AASP grant aims to evolve student-athlete support services and enhance their overall experience. The grant will fortify academic centers, invest in new technologies, and provide critical services that directly benefit student-athletes.
A selection committee, comprising member school representatives, awards the funding each year. To be eligible for AASP grants, schools must be in the Football Championship Subdivision or not sponsor a football program. Schools can request up to $100,000 and are required to match at least 20% of the awarded amount. All 11 schools receiving AASP grants for the 2023-24 academic year will receive the requested funds. These grants support schools in meeting the requirements of the Division I Academic Performance Program, ensuring an environment that promotes academic success for student-athletes. The funds can be used for academic facility enhancements, technology upgrades, professional development for staff, tutoring resources, and student-athlete career development opportunities. It’s an exciting opportunity for Norfolk State University to continue their commitment to academic excellence and the holistic development of their student-athletes.
